A recent study at Harvard showed that A’s now make up 60% of all course grades, which is up 24% from 2005. A new proposal would cap the number of A grades at 20% per course. Maybe 60% of A’s indicate that a lot of students are working harder today, or are smarter, or doing something to earn more A’s than they did in 2005. The students are protesting because they say that giving out grades should be based on performance. Competition might not always be fair, but it is an important ingredient in evaluation. It will be interesting to see whether the Harvard students or the faculty wins this issue. How do you think we are being graded in life? The Bible has a simple standard that God uses for grading our life—it’s grace. But, grace must be received.
